Summary
Many gamification efforts in learning fail because they add superficial game elements—like points and badges—to poor instructional design without improving the learning experience itself. True game-based learning is different: it uses game design principles to create interactive, experiential learning aligned with how people naturally learn. At GamiCon48V, Totem Learning emphasized game thinking, which focuses on feedback loops, personal agency, meaningful consequences, and real engagement—not gimmicks. The eLearning industry often sells quick fixes for engagement, but real impact comes from designing learning that mirrors real-world challenges and fosters mastery. Meaningful, learner-centered design—not templated gamification—is what truly drives behavior change.
