Summary

In the realm of board games, aesthetics play a pivotal role, from intricately carved chess pieces to vibrant designs on Snakes and Ladders boards. Evolving beyond gameplay alone, thematic artwork and high-quality components, like meeples, drive appeal across various game genres. Traditionally, game publishers hired artists whose work became integral to game identity and marketability, a practice now challenged by generative AI technologies such as DALL-E and Midjourney. These tools generate art based on trained themes, raising ethical and legal questions about copyright ownership and artistic integrity. As the industry adapts, issues of co-authorship and consumer acceptance of AI-generated art are becoming central to board game design and commerce.
